Strategy 1—Connect to prior knowledge A couple of weeks ago, I shared my step of setting up a study schedule for the CPTD exam and finding a community of support. When I joined a study group, my strategies morphed as others shared their approaches and as I found what worked for me. I haven’t had to study for an exam for several years, so this was a process of getting back into an exam study mode. I welcome you to join me in discovering what works for you! As is so often the case, what helps one adult structure their learning may not work for another. I’ll include some factors that were an influence for me, with the hopes that may help make your decisions easier. Someone recently made the comment about instructional design that if you make structural decisions once and early, then you cut down on your time because you don’t have to keep revisiting them. I needed to use that strategy here! Two factors that have pushed me toward some study choices:
Strategy 1—Connect to prior knowledge
Strategy 2—Study for foundational knowledge The 2020 CPTD Certification Handbook: Study Planning Guide identifies specific knowledge and skill statements that match with specific sections in the TDBoK. Fellow study group members highlighted that the CPTD Prep Course identifies specific enabling objectives for each of those statements.
Strategy 3—Prepare for application question thinking
Study group members have shared resources along the way, so I’ve already benefited from review and perspective through their video summaries, discussion and case questions, and visual references.
As you're discovering what works for you, what are study decisions are you encountering? What resources can you point us to? Coming next…review strategies. My exam date is five weeks out, so I’ll be diving into dedicated review soon!
